RUSH: I tell you, I thought they were gonna have to drag Rupert Murdoch out of the stadium on a stretcher last night. My God, can you believe how much audience they had to lose during that game in the second half? Can you imagine how many make goods or how much money they're gonna have to be rebating to their sponsors because so many eyeballs -- I'm guessing that there was a huge tune-out the second half, 'cause, man. Folks, look, I have to be real careful here. As you know, I'm a huge football fan, and I don't want to take anything away from the Seahawks. In fact, grab sound bite number two. I want to remind you of my prediction early on, on Friday, on this program. I'm gonna play the prediction for you. And, by the way, the environmentalist wacko pick also came through with the Seahawks. So whatever I'm gonna say, I don't mean it as anything to take away from what the Seahawks accomplished or pulled off in the game last night. But here's what I said early on, first segment of the first hour of the program on Friday. RUSH ARCHIVE: I'm leaning toward the Seahawks here for one reason, only one reason. I think it has to do with the defense. I think the Seattle defense can keep Peyton Manning off the field. I think their defense -- because I've studied it, folks, I've looked at tape, and the Seattle defense has the ability to prevent Denver's long drives, time, clock-chewing drive. RUSH: The only thing I didn't foresee was all the turnovers, but I knew the pass rush. Denver, supposedly they'd stared down a great pass rush from the Kansas City Chiefs twice during the season, but they had never seen what hit them last night. During the game Kathryn looks over at me, "You seem depressed." And I said, "Do I? I am." I was down in the dumps. I thought this whole game, the whole thing, every aspect I thought was a bummer. Look, I'm gonna be very careful. I don't mean to be -- it's a game, it's a national pastime, people's escape and so forth, but, man, I just thought there was so much mediocrity. I thought the ads, maybe three ads, three or four ads were any good. The rest of them were mediocre. I had spent all this time telling all of you to pay attention to the ads, because advertising people have their finger on the pulse of our culture and if you really want to learn where we are as a country and so forth, make sure you watch the Super Bowl ads, and they were a bomb. Well, that's the thing, it may not be wrong, in terms of just the overall mediocrity. Now, the Seahawks were not mediocre. Again, I want to stress, I'm not trying to take anything away. I predicted the Seahawks to win, so I gotta be real careful. We got big audiences in Denver and Seattle as well here. We own both towns and we have for many, many moons. I'm just telling you what I thought, and I thought the game coverage was a bummer. The Super Bowl, for the last game of the season, I think having it in New York, something about that, I don't think flew. For the championship game, the championship game the National Football League, that game did not at all put forth the best face of the National Football League. It was like one team didn't even show up. And there I go. I'm not trying to anger you people in Denver. This is not a personal comment on anybody. The MVP, nobody ever heard of the guy. How do you pick an MVP in a game like that? The MVP might have been Peyton Manning from the Seahawks' perspective. Just kidding. Just to make a point. You know, we've got audio sound bites here, the O'Reilly interview of Obama during the pregame show. Now, folks, let me tell you something. I think that is the wrong venue to do a serious interview of the president of the United States. O'Reilly actually asked really good questions that Obama hasn't been asked before. But that's not the place people want to see that, particularly not on the network that's televising the game, not on the network televising the pregame show. If you're gonna do an interview with the president, it better be about the game, it better be about football, Americana, this kind of stuff, because now, how many of you know what Obama said? How many of you know how he answered the questions? So now it can easily be said, "Okay, questions have been answered. No big deal. We can move on. Nothing to see here." In a sense, just another wasted opportunity. But there was no way it wasn't gonna happen. The only thing I'm surprised at, O'Reilly was on Fox this morning giving his post-interview recap of how he thought it went. He said (paraphrasing), "Look, I think Obama's a great guy. I think he's got a lot of heart. I don't think he wants to hurt people like these right-wingers do. I don't think Obama wants to hurt anybody. I don't think Obama's trying to ruin anybody's life like these right-wingers. The only thing that surprised me is that O'Reilly didn't tell Obama that in the interview, which I thought would happen. But it happened, what, 12 hours later. At one point during this game I wondered if the parents of the Broncos' players would try to invoke the "mercy rule." You know how parents in high school, when the team is getting ripped to shreds, the parents stand up and say, "End it! End it! This is humiliating. This is embarrassing our children." I wondered if the parents of Broncos players thought about trying to invoke the "mercy rule. I don't know, folks. It was just a disappointing thing, and the game... I guess you've answered the question now. The number one offense rolls in, facing the number one defense in a pass-happy National Football League where the rules changes over the recent years have been to favor the offense. They have handcuffed the defense. They have made it tougher and tougher with the safety rules and the hits, trying to limit concussions. They've just made it tougher and tougher and tougher on defenses, and yet last night defense totally dominated with the pass rush. It was total domination. Peyton Manning didn't have more than a second and a half to throw. Everybody's asking, "Well, why didn't he go deep?" He didn't have time to go 10 yards! "Well, he could have thrown it." He didn't have enough time for the receivers to get deep. That pass rush was swarming, and those guys were hitting. They were creaming. That first little crossing pattern that was completed to Demaryius Thomas, the defender Kam Chancellor for the Seahawks just knocked the guy 10 yards straight back, and that was after the first snap of the game resulted in a safety. So it was a... (sigh) I was disappointed. I'm dialing it back here, folks, in getting into detail with you. Did I like Bruno Mars? It turns out that might have been the highlight of the game, the halftime show. I had never seen Bruno Mars perform, and I've now only seen. I can't hear those shows. I don't know what's happening. Other than when he played the drums, I can't tell what's going on up there. I have to read the captioning for some of the lyrics, but I can't hear melodies or any of that. But it seemed exciting. It seemed like those people had talent. It seemed like those people were choreographed. It seemed like those people knew what they were doing, and they brought it there that evening, and they got it all done, in and out, in 20 minutes. They seemed like they were professionals. (interruption) Well, I just... Look, I'm really caught here, 'cause I want to unload, and that's just not the right thing to do here. I mean, nobody wanted to screw up last night. Everybody was, I think, trying their best, and I'm not just talking about the teams. I'm just not talking about the game. The whole thing, to me, was this is not a Super Bowl. (interruption) The injury reports? What injury reports? What do you mean, what injury...? (interruption) You mean pregame injury...? Oh, well, you know... (interruption) Oh, yeah, yeah, yeah. Well, I can't tell you the number of times a player is hurt on the field and they have to come out, stop the game, go to a time-out and come back, time-out, and we never learned what happened to the poor schlub. In some cases, we didn't even learn who it was. (interruption) Don't goad me. (interruption) You're in there goading me, Snerdley, 'cause I unloaded with Snerdley. When I walked in the door I unloaded on him. Snerdley didn't even see half the game. He was flying back from Washington, so he didn't even see it. Let me take a break here, folks, because we got all kinds of stuff happening on the program today. I do want to tell you: The Seahawks, I'm taking nothing away from them. None. (interruption) Mmm-hmm. (interruption) No. No. I'm not saying in the future defense is gonna rule. In this case, the Broncos... You know, when you're facing a pass rush like they were facing, it wasn't even... They weren't even blitzing them. When you're facing a swarm, I think.... Peyton Manning had a pack of wasps on him all night! In football, the way you deal with that is screen passes, play action passes. He didn't have time for any of that. He didn't have time to make any adjustments, even. They couldn't go the short passes, couldn't go screen, couldn't go play action, didn't have enough time for any of that to develop. This pass rush was just over the top. (interruption) Well, they lost Knowshon Moreno early on with an injury, relatively early and they were back to their backup. He's not bad. His last name is Ball. But they weren't able to do anything. I tell you what. Here's one of the great stats: Peyton Manning set a record last night for completions in a Super Bowl game -- 33. In the first half, he had 54 yards. Not on 33 completions. That was for the game. I think he ended up with 280 yards. He had more completions, but some of them were behind the line of scrimmage,. Some of them, you know, gained a couple/three yards here. They... I don't know. I also detected, I wondered, "Is there something wrong with his arm?" He looked like he was pushing the ball last night, not throwing it. But nobody said anything about that, so I probably was seeing things that were not taking place. Anyway, it's true. The Seahawks fans rioted and the Broncos fans didn't -- and I thought, logically, it should be the other way around. RUSH: How about the Coca-Cola commercial? You see the Coca-Cola commercial in the Super Bowl? The Coca-Cola commercial, it says here in an AP story, "landed in the proverbial hot seat, but not for being lewd -- it showed Americans of different races and ethnicities singing America, the Beautiful in a variety of different languages. After it aired, many took to various social networking sites to express their outrage at the song being performed in any language other than English. Now, I gotta take back everything I said about watching these, 'cause I warned you -- not warned you, I urged you -- you know, "Watch these commercials, and you'll get a good handle on the pulse of the country. It's up to these advertisers to know how to reach these people to accomplish whatever they want, be it brand enlargement or brand identification, reinforcement, or the actual sale of product that they can track that day. I mean, ultimately, every advertisement's designed to sell product, but some are results oriented and they want to start tracking it immediately. Others are just brand ID, brand recognition. There are any number of different reasons, but whatever the reason, with as much time as these advertisers have and as many money as they've committed to it, you figure they've got the best people on the campaign whatever it is gonna be run. So Coca-Cola comes up. If you think the best way, if you are convinced that the best way to sell Coca-Cola to Americans is to sing America the Beautiful in multiple languages, then why don't you produce the product with labels printed in 10 different languages? Every market gets 10 different label versions of Coke. You get 10 Diet Coke labels, 10 more for Sprite and so on, and if you run out of shelf space, just go buy more shelf space and load 'em up. Is that the way to sell Coca-Cola? Is that what...? The whole world sees the Super Bowl, yeah. But I don't think the commercial is intended to be international, and I don't know which commercials... I don't think they're selling these commercials with world advertising rates. They're selling with US sponsorship in mind. These things would be so prohibitively expensive if they were selling spots guaranteeing a world audience. They couldn't afford it, and you wouldn't know how to measure it in the first place. I thought maybe the Republican leadership was behind the Coke commercial. That's what I thought when I saw it. I said, "Whoa, who got hold of this advertising campaign? The Republican leadership's gotta be doing this." Anyway, there were only three or four ads in the Super Bowl that were memorable. The whole thing just didn't seem like... You know, I use the word "karma," but it seemed like everybody -- except for the Seahawks -- was running at half speed, at half consciousness. Everybody. It was the weirdest sensation watching the Super Bowl. I never got comfortable watching the whole game. Nothing seemed right, and I really did, I really had visions of Rupert Murdoch being carried out of there on a stretcher in a panic over the ratings. We'll see. (interruption) Yeah. Snerdley is saying, "It does line up with the times, 'cause it doesn't feel right." There was just too much mediocrity out there, and not commented on as mediocre. The mediocrity was championed as excellence or that we should at least accept it as excellence and I thought it was disastrous. RUSH: I'm getting e-mail. "Rush, why are you holding back? You don't worry about offending people." Here's the thing. It's a football game. We're not talking about issues and parties and things that dramatically affect people's lives and the status of the country here. I don't want to call people out individually. The best I can tell you is, I thought the whole thing was like everybody involved was at 50% consciousness or 60%. It was not even a good game. It wasn't a fun game to watch. I love good defensive football, don't misunderstand. This game was filled with mistake after mistake after mistake after incompetence after incompetence after incompetence, and there were no adjustments made. That's why I said I don't want to take anything away from the Seahawks because they may be the primary reason why the Broncos just didn't look like they were even there. I think the game was so bad that the Fox TV crew didn't quite know how to deal with it, 'cause they can't sit there and say, "That's bad. This is horrible." They pay gazillions of dollars to televise this thing and they have to sit there and pump up their partner, the NFL. So they had to try to cover for it, and they did it. I mean, how do you build up something that has nothing redeemable in it, or very little, other than to focus on the defensive players, which, that game, the MVP, nothing against the MVP. Some 911 truther from Brooklyn storms -- think about the security of this. You've got more security at this Super Bowl than at any event in New York in recent years, or at least as much, and the minute the MVP begins his press conference, some 911 truther comes out camera left, takes over the microphone, grabs it with his hand and for five or six seconds starts mouthing the fact the government blew up the buildings, 911 was government run, look into it, and finally security came and dragged the guy away. The MVP's standing there looking, "Oh, gee, what is this? I need some help up here." Who's the security firm here? Wile E. I don't know, folks, I was just disappointed as a fan. I was just disappointed in the game. (interruption) What cold weather? Oh, well, of course they do, 'cause they dodged a bullet. They got paralyzing snow in New York today, 12 hours difference and they'd be playing the game in that stuff. Of course the cold weather town has now won the Super Bowl. I think it's a mistake. I think the cold weather, the Super Bowl's not supposed to be played in temperatures below 50. That was one of the age-old NFL rules, Super Bowl game by rule, they had to blow that rule out, cannot occur in a place where the average temperature dips below 50 on the day of the game. That's a law, NFL law. And of course they broomed that 'cause they had to pay off this stadium. I mean, that's the deal. That's how you assign Super Bowls anymore. You get a new stadium, the league will come in and play the game there, help you retire the debt or whatever. That's fine. It's their business. We'll just look at the overnight ratings and we'll see what happened, look at the second half. I'll betcha we're gonna be able to watch the bleed-off of the viewing audience. Now, we had a sound bite. Let me get on to other things here, folks, 'cause I don't want to be a downer myself. See, I'm gonna tell you. I live in mortal fear that you someday will think of this radio show the way I was feeling watching that game last night, like everybody was phoning it in. That is why I come in here and every day strive to be better than the day before, meet and surpass your expectations. I never, ever phone it in. I live in mortal fear that you will have an attitude like I did about what I was watching last night. I never ever want that to happen. Maybe that's why it's affecting me this way. It's a little personal to me. RUSH: Here is Matthew Mills, the 911 "truther" that interrupted the MVP press conference with the MVP, Malcolm Smith, of the Seattle Seahawks. This runs by here real quick. It's nine seconds this guy took, but envision this. You've got a crowded, no doubt overheated, small, little area in this giant stadium where tens of 20/30 media people in there, and the MVP still all decked out in winter gear, even though it's not called for. Everybody's sweating themselves crazy, gotta be very close in there, and he's getting ready to answer questions, and out of the blue, from the left on your TV screen, pops up the 911 "truther" who looked like a rabid member of Occupy America. SMITH: All right. Is everybody all right? Check his press pass. RUSH: That was the MVP. That was Malcolm Smith, who lightened it up a little bit with his reaction. "Okay, Rush, freedom of speech. A guy can run in there and say whatever he wants." Oh, yeah, he can, but where is the security? How many people were paid? How much security do they have for this event? This guy obviously got on the media press pass. He had to get in that way. RUSH: Let me see. What is this? Deadline.com: "Super Bowl Ratings Down Double Digits From 2013, Still in Top 5 Ever Despite Blowout." Those are the overnights. You just wait. This is gonna be even worse than they think, 'cause it was just... Look, do you ever feel handcuffed? I feel handcuffed. There are just things I can't say. You just have to trust me. It would make no sense to say 'em, and the longer I hem-haw about it the more you're just gonna get frustrated. So I'm just gonna back off and let's just stick now with other things that happened, 'cause you know how I feel about it. It was a downer. It was a disappointment. (interruption) I have no idea how the commissioner felt about it. I assume they are like most people, living in a bubble and, "Oh, wonderful! It was great. It was a Super Bowl. Hey, New York, 50 degrees! Hey, we pulled it off. Hey, it was wonderful the time." I have no idea. There's nothing the commissioner can do about this, no waving a magic wand that could address the things I found disappointing and downer-ish about it. New Delhi, February 3: Shipping Corporation of India is ready to run container ships regularly between India and Myanmar within a month. But this is subject to the Government agreeing to pay ?30 crore annual subsidy for the service, as it is expected to be loss-making. SCI, being a listed company, is answerable to shareholders for starting a loss-making service, particularly at a time when the company is already incurring losses. In the first half of this fiscal (2013-14), SCI recorded a loss of ?222 crore. At present, there are no liner services between India and Myanmar. As a result, ships ply between the two countries only when full cargo is available. Liner service is time-table based, which means ships have to run even if there isn’t enough cargo. The firm proposes to run the direct service as a part of India’s efforts to increase trade with Myanmar. Prabir De, Senior Fellow, Research and Information System for Developing Countries (RIS), estimates that India-Myanmar trade has the potential to touch $8.9 billion by 2015, an almost five-fold increase from the $1.87 billion in 2012. As per the plan, SCI will run a ship with capacity to carry 1,500 twenty feet equivalent unit (TEU) containers every fortnight, say official sources. The ports of call will be Yangon (Myanmar), Chennai (India) and Colombo (Sri Lanka). Additionally, Krishnapatnam Port in the east coast would serve as an inducement port, which means, subject to cargo availability, the SCI ship can call on the port as well, said an official. Such regular calls will create a capacity to carry 36,000 TEU containers each way in one year. According to Subrata K Behera, Senior Research Analyst, Drewry Maritime Research, a maritime consultancy, container traffic handled by three ports in Myanmar was 0.8 million TEU. SRINAGAR, Feb 3: After a gap of two weeks following the alleged recovery of a huge quantity of Brown Sugar from one of the truck driver from Pakistan Administered Kashmir (PAK), the weekly bus services both from Srinagar and Poonch resumed today. The ‘Karwan-e-Aman’ bus service between Srinagar and Muzaffarabad resumed today. However, the trade links was not restored and the standoff over the issue of releasing of truck driver still been issued at diplomatic level. Officials of trade facilitation centre Salamabad Uri told that Kashmir Times that the Karwan –e-Aman bus service was resumed today by the authorities of both the countries after they held successful talks few days back to resume the service. The officials said that around 24 passengers, who were virtually stranded here boarded the bus from Srinagar for their journey to Muzaffarabad in Pakistan Administered Kashmir. Similarly various passengers from Pakistan Administered Kashmir reached Srinagar through the Karwan-e-Aman bus service. However, the trade standoff between India and Pakistan continues, with truckers from both sides stranded since January 17. Reports said that Truckers Association in PAK has threatened to disrupt the bus service till all drivers return from that part of the state. The Karawan-e-Aman was suspended on January 20 when a PAK truck driver was arrested after 114 packets of brown sugar were recovered from his vehicle at Salamabad, Uri trade centre. Later, Pakistan closed the gate and refused to take back their drivers who remained stranded in Uri. The trade between the two sides is already suspended for the last 12 days. The 27 trucks along with their drivers from this part of the state are stranded in PAK. Similarly the 48 PAK drivers are also stranded in Salamabad in wake of a standoff between the two authorities. The three-day trade usually takes place from Tuesday to Friday. But the recent arrest of a Pakistani driver after the recovery of brown sugar from his truck led to the suspension of the trade and travel. The traders have also expressed serious concern over their goods and truck drivers stranded on LoC. Khan said that goods worth crores of rupees are laying at Salamabad and other side. They said that if the prevailing condition continued further more they will face huge financial losses as the most of the stranded items are perishable goods and they cannot be kept longer. The traders have also appealed the both New Delhi and Islamabad to resolve the crisis without making it a point of prestige. They said that LoC was a biggest CBM initiated by both the countries in 2008, after they had initiated bus service in April 2005. The weekly Poonch-Rawlakot bus service, which was suspended for two weeks, resumed today. As per reports, one hundred sixty four people crossed the LoC in today’s weekly bus service from Chakkan-Da-Bagh in Poonch. These included forty nine over staying Pakistan Administered Kashmir (PAK) visitors whose permits were temporarily extended by the district administration in Poonch. They were relieved after the two week long standoff ended today. The headway has been made after Pakistan softened its stand on the release of the arrested truck driver. Official reports claimed that 69 PAK visitors including 49 overstaying returned to their native places while three Indian fresh visitors crossed over to the other side. 72 Indian visitors including those overstaying in PAK returned Poonch with twenty fresh PAK visitors. The border was opened twice today to facilitate the weekly crossing after a gap of two months. "Given the weakness in the recent monthly Nielsen vitamin\supplement sales data, we ran a 3-year correlation with comps at GNC, VSI, and sales at VITC (Nasdaq: VITC). The correlation with GNC is very low (18%), is higher at VSI (46%), and highest at VITC (81%). While correlations are inconclusive for GNC and VSI, given the unusually cold and disruptive weather in 4Q, it is prudent to reduce our 4Q13 sales and EPS at both GNC and VSI. We are not reducing FY14 however, since weather in 4Q13 should have no impact on earnings power in FY14. Given the weakness in both stocks YTD, a weak 4Q appears priced in, in our view, thus, we remain constructive on GNC and VSI at these levels," said Short. "Beginning in 2010, GNC’s comps have had little correlation with Nielsen data. We believe there are a few factors that explain this. 1) We believe GNC's product mix is more exposed to the sports nutrition category than Nielsen's. Note that in looking at a breakdown of GNC’s Domestic Retail segment sales by category, Sports Nutrition constitutes ~43% of the segment’s sales, which appears to be much higher than Nielsen’s sports nutrition mix. 2) GNC-branded propriety products represent ~60% of total domestic company-owned retail sales – and private label penetration is ~80% in categories measured by Nielsen. We believe that the Nielsen data focuses more on third-party product sales, including well-known brands such as Ensure, Centrum, Nature Made, and 5-Hour Energy. 3) GNC has had a number of company-specific initiatives, including new product introductions, brand extensions, and, most recently, the Members Pricing roll-out, which will help GNC take share," added the analyst. Governor Andrew M. Cuomo has announced the launch of a new interactive Adirondack recreation planning tool to promote tourism attractions in the Adirondack Region and spur economic development opportunities. The portal, found at www.VisitAdirondacks.com, was created in partnership between cross-regional organizations--The Adirondack Association of Towns and Villages (AATV), Center for Economic Growth, and Central Adirondack Partnership for the 21st Century--and funded through the Governor's Regional Economic Development Council initiative. "The trip planning portal we are unveiling on VisitAdirondacks.com features all you need to know to plan a great trip to the Adirondacks," Governor Cuomo said. "Spanning six million acres, the Adirondack Park is a vast region that has tremendous recreational and tourism opportunities for residents and visitors alike. With this website, we are making it easy for visitors to find and choose the activities and attractions they want to explore. I applaud all the partners who collaborated on this initiative that will boost our efforts to promote the local tourism industry and create new economic opportunities for the region. The Adirondack Park Recreation Web Portal will provide residents and travelers to New York's six-million-acre park, which spans parts of the Capital, North Country and Mohawk Valley regions, with the ability to map their visit with a concise list of recreational opportunities, amenities, lodging, and restaurants, as well as off-the-beaten-path attractions and travel preferences, via the Adirondack Regional Tourism Council's official website, VisitAdirondacks.com. A mobile app is scheduled to launch in the coming weeks and will provide on-the-go users with the same planning options available on the portal. Funding for the project was awarded by Empire State Development, through the Regional Economic Development Council initiative, as well as from the Capital Region's Center for Economic Growth (CEG). "The Adirondack Web Portal is exactly the type of project that exemplifies the regional economic development process and we are pleased to support this exciting initiative through the Governor's Regional Council and CFA process," said Empire State Development President, CEO and Commissioner Kenneth Adams. "As a result of this cross-regional and collaborative effort, tourists, residents and businesses alike will benefit with increased connectivity and promotion of the Park's assets, further spurring economic development and growth across a vast expanse of Upstate New York. "This project symbolizes the great strides our state has made in cross-regional collaboration. Members of Governor Andrew M. Cuomo's Economic Development Councils from the Capital Region, Mohawk Valley, and North Country were eager to partner on this project as a means to leverage the Park's recreational assets to promote economic development," said F. Michael Tucker, President and CEO of CEG. CAP-21 Executive Director Nicholas Rose said, "Almost all of travel planning now occurs via internet and related mobile applications. The Governor has worked diligently to raise the profile of the Adirondacks as a great place to live, work and play. The Adirondack web portal will build upon the Governor's work and help promote the recreational assets that are located within this unique region. We are within a day's drive of over 75 million people, and the portal has just made it easier to come play and sample all the recreational wonders that the Adirondacks has to offer. It's a big park, and there is something for everyone. The portal includes 4,000 travel data sets that have been organized into a comprehensive, easy-to-navigate recreation and vacation planning tool. Travelers and residents can use the portal to discover the Adirondack Park's unparalleled outdoor recreation opportunities, such as finding trailheads and places to fish or paddle, including lists of boat launches, gear rentals, places to get licenses, or where to grab lunch. Available via several access points on VisitAdirondacks.com, the recreational portal can be found on the homepage's main menu ("Come Play"), at the bottom of the Outdoor Recreation page, and on the sidebar of the First Time Visitors page. With a single click, users can search and connect with data that is specifically targeted to them based on travel criteria, including: family travel, traveling with pets, handicap accessible, seasonal recreation, geographic areas within the park and recreation type (e.g. snowmobiling trails or downhill skiing and snowboarding). With each selection made in the portal, the user is also presented with a list of what's nearby, including recreation opportunities, lodging, dining, shopping, and other attractions. Adaptive web design features of the web portal, and the soon-to-launch mobile-friendly app, will act as an essential resource for travelers accessing data from their desktops, tablets and smartphones alike. The portal adopts strategies developed by the Adirondack Partnership's Adirondack Park Recreation Strategy Group and was identified as a regional priority project by the North Country Regional Economic Development Council. The project will directly support key aspects of the strategic plans developed by the Capital Region, Mohawk Valley, and North Country Regional Economic Development Councils, including the promotion of long-term investment, sustainability and revitalization within the North Country, Capital Region and the Mohawk Valley. "This new web portal brings the majesty of the Adirondacks to the fingertips of millions of potential visitors," said Senator Betty Little, chair of the Senate Cultural Affairs, Tourism, Parks and Recreation Committee. "The portal is interactive and user-friendly and my hope, expectation really because it's good, is once people visiting the portal see what we have to offer they won't be able to resist a real visit. Tourism promotion is all about exposure and making it easier for the consumer. This portal accomplishes that and more. I thank all involved in its development for their hard work and appreciate Governor Cuomo's and the Regional Economic Development Council's continuing dedication to increased economic activity in the Adirondack Park. Email | Twitter | Google+ NeuLife Neurological Services LLC is a small business right now, with about 24 employees. But that could change. NeuLife, which is a rehab facility for patients recovering from traumatic brain injuries, was licensed by the Florida Agency for Health Care Administration in September for 27 beds and has a pending application for another 13. The facility is a former 60-bed assisted living facility that was bank-owned and could expand up to 54 licensed beds. Bill Dannheim, the chief operating officer, said if the facility is able to fill up to the full 54 beds, it would need anywhere from 175 to 200 people employed at the Mount Dora site. "Every time we bring in another client [patient], we hire two more employees," Dannheim said. "It'll make us one of the largest employers in Lake County. The three largest employers in Lake County are in the medical world, with Florida Hospital Waterman, South Lake Hospital and Leesburg Regional Medical Center all having more than 1,000 employees, according to the Lake County office of Economic Development & Tourism. Currently, NeuLife is a private-pay facility, although it does work with workers' compensation insurance companies. The facility doesn't work with government payors, Medicare and Medicaid, but is looking at possibly contracting with private insurance companies. The facility is having a grand opening Feb. 5 from 1-5 p.m. The facility is 60,000 square feet, plus a 5,000-square-foot administration office, on 43 acres of land at 2725 Robie Ave. in Mount Dora. Dannheim said the Lake County location gives them the ability to draw patients from anywhere in the country. JEFFERSON — It’s lunchtime at West Elementary School in Jef ferson, and an excited line of young sters is dishing up hot meals, while their classmates, clutching Velcro-fastened bags, arrange items from their cold lunch on the long cafeteria tables. Everyone tries to sit near a friend, but a lucky few youngsters have brought a special pal with them — their “Lunch Buddies” from Jefferson High School. Since mid-autumn, volunteers from Jefferson High School’s Student Ambassadors have served as role models at West weekly through the Big Brothers Big Sisters “Lunch Buddy” program. The mentors spend lunch and recess time with their special “Lunch Buddy. Lately, there have been a lot of inside recesses due to cold and inclement weather, so the buddy pairs have been playing games, reading, building projects and enjoying other activities together. “These matches are awesome,” said fourth-grade teacher Jessica Krause. “The match for one of my students even asked if she could come in extra to help her in math. She is making a huge impact. Ann Dudzek, Jefferson County Lunch Buddies coordinator for Big Brothers Big Sisters of Rock, Walworth and Jefferson Counties, said that last year, the school had one adult “Big Sister” who was a lunch buddy with a fifth-grader. The little girl has gone on to the middle school and her adult buddy is now a full fledged “Big Sister. However, that left West without any lunch buddies at all, and there was a great interest in starting such a program, Dudzek said. She addressed several community groups about the opportunity to become lunch buddies, but had no takers. Then Dudzek thought of the program that exists at Fort Atkinson High School, based on the Big Brothers Big Sisters Lunch Buddies model but run independently, so she decided to contact Jefferson High School to see if some students there would be interested in a similar program. After all, the high school is only a couple of blocks away. Dudzek met with Shannon Mooney, adviser for the Student Ambassadors group (formerly STAR, or “Students Talk About Respect). Mooney was receptive to the idea of high school ambassadors pairing up with youngsters to spend time together and serve as role models. Students who wished to become mentors through this program had to fill out an application, undergo reference checks, and then participate in an interview process. The younger students went through interviews too, with a coordinator talking to both the younger child and his or her parents in order to help make the best match possible between “littles” and “bigs. Nearly 20 Lunch Buddy matches have been set up this year. “Many of the high school students are West Elementary School alums and are interested in giving back their time to the school,” Dudzek said. “Almost everyone said they want to give back,” she said, adding that she was impressed with the number of applications she received from the high school students. Morgan Kuptz, one of the big buddies, said that she attended West Elementary School when she was younger and it was kind of nice to come back as an older student. “I like kids, and this sounded fun,” Kuptz said. “I was one of the first ones to come over here. Kuptz said her little buddy is quiet, but obviously still enjoys her company. “I missed one time and she was asking me, ‘Where were you?’” the high school senior recalled. Sadie Anderson, another senior, said she thought the mentoring program would be a great opportunity and it has worked out well so far. “I have a little buddy who’s very talkative and she just tells me about everything,” Anderson said. “She enjoys having me visit and her friends seem to, too. Aspen Wolter, Anderson’s third-grade buddy, said that it was kind of fun to have an older student with whom to talk. “It’s kind of cool. Sometimes, they’ll tell you about things you’ll need to know and do as you get older. It really helps you to know what’s coming,” Wolter said. Brooke Papcke, Kuptz’s third-grade buddy, said that Kuptz is fun to be around. She said she would recommend the buddy program to younger students if they have the opportunity to try it when they become third-graders. Jarad Bartelt, another high school mentor, said he did not attend West as a child, but he was familiar with the school, as his mother and cross-country coach worked there. “It has been great to come down here,” he said. “I have worked with kids before, babysitting, helping with summer school, through church, but this is a new experience and every kid has a different personality. Bartelt’s little buddy, fourth-grader Dylan Vanover, said that Bartelt is a funny guy and it’s good to spend time with him. “Especially when my friends are gone, then I have someone to play with,” Vanover said. Dudzek said that everyone — teachers, families and students both big and small — seems to be thrilled with the program. “We’ve got some great matches,” she said. “And Mr. Howard, the principal at West, has been very welcoming. Dudzek said she has really enjoyed getting to know the students and schools this school year. Beth Glende, a West counselor who has helped to coordinate “Lunch Buddies” on the elementary school end, said that the program has been a win-win for the School District of Jefferson and all of the families who are impacted. “The high school students have been great at supporting our students at West,” Glende said. “I have noticed a really positive influence on the students who participate here at West, in terms of making positive connections with other students and playing appropriately on the playground. Meanwhile, Glende said, the partnership provides a rich opportunity for the older students to learn responsibility and reliability, to hone their empathy and to serve as good models. Coordinators hope to continue the cooperative program at West Elementary School in coming school years, and potentially to expand the program to other elementary schools. “Students love to spend time with their big buddies,” Dudzek said. “If I could get a lunch buddy for everyone, I would. The 3-year-old dog dropped more than 10 feet to the bottom of the watery hole during a Sunday morning walk with his owner, Mattie Moore, who nearly fell in herself. Buffalo firefighter Michael Paveljack says rescuers put plywood around the 2-foot hole to stabilize the ground, then widened the gap for the rescue. Paveljack climbed down a ladder and fashioned a makeshift harness from the dog's leash that allowed rescuers to hoist it from the hole.
