Former Premier Service Medical Aid Society chief executive officer Dr Cuthbert Dube could own as much as 20 percent of a key subsidiary of the enterprise, an official close to the firm has revealed. This came as the PSMAS board appointed experienced business consultant Mr Luxon Zembe the new chair, and Dr Farai Fredrick Muchena the acting chief executive officer. Dr Muchena is the Premier Service Medical Investments managing director. Mr Zembe takes over from Mrs Meisie Namasasu, who was removed from the post following revelations of mega salaries being paid to Dr Dube and other senior managers at PSMAS. Dr Dube was retired from the post last week. Information reaching The Herald also indicates board member, Mr George Chabururuka, had tendered his resignation. Mr Chabururuka is finance and administration director at the Higher Education Ministry. The board is understood to be investigating how Dr Dube allegedly came to own 20 percent of PSMI, which is the PSMAS investment arm. The board would like to know how such a huge stake fell into the hands of one employee and whether the equity was paid for or was part of his “incentives package”. It is understood that Mr Zembe’s appointment to chair the board was influenced by this issue. Mr Newton Mhlanga had been acting chair since Mrs Namasasu was relieved of her duties, but he did not get the substantive appointment because there is a possibility that he may have been aware of, or possibly involved in, Dr Dube’s acquisition of 20 percent of PSMI. “When the board met Dr Dube just before retiring him, Dr Dube said they could fire him as CEO of the holding company PSMAS, but he would remain a shareholder of the subsidiary PSMI. “Preliminary investigations indicate that the shareholding was acquired a few years ago, before Namasasu was chair. It most likely happened when Mhlanga or someone else was board chair,” the official said. Mr Mhlanga previously served as board chair before Mrs Namasasu’s time. The official said the board was concerned with the entire transaction and how it happened without a full board resolution. Efforts to get clarification from the concerned characters were fruitless last night. However, the official said the board resolved to appoint Mr Zembe as board chair and Dr Muchena as acting CEO to both bring in a fresh perspective and to ensure stability at PSMAS. A statement from the board yesterday read, “The board of PSMAS is pleased to announce and inform its members, service providers, key stakeholders and the public in general that, at its duly constituted board meeting of 31 January 2014, it unanimously elected Mr Luxon Zembe, an independent non-executive director, to be the PSMAS substantive chairman with immediate effect. Mr Zembe was appointed to the PSMAS board in 2012. He is chair of CBZ Holdings and a board member of Schweppes Zimbabwe Ltd. Mr Zembe is a past president and chairman of the Zimbabwe National Chamber of Commerce, and has or is associated with several other boards, including the Zimbabwe Institute of Management, the National Manpower Advisory Council, and the Institute of Directors. He currently chairs the National Corporate Governance Code Committee responsible for boards and directors duties and responsibilities. Mr Zembe was involved in crafting the Code of Corporate Governance for Parastatals and State Enterprises, which was adopted and approved by cabinet. The PSMAS board pledged to address past mistakes that affected the firm. “The board would like, once again, to assure its members and all the stakeholders that mistakes made in the past are being dealt with expeditiously and decisively in line with the PSMAS constitution and the laws of Zimbabwe,” the statement said. Ives Galarcep Sporting News Tweet Text size A A A Toronto FC's double swoop for Michael Bradley and Jermain Defoe was easily the biggest splash of the winter, but it might not wind up being the most impactful move made by an MLS team this offseason. That distinction goes to the LA Galaxy for a truly game-changing decision to launch a team in the third tier of American soccer, USL Pro. The move helps give the Galaxy a very important piece to the player development puzzle, and could become the standard other MLS teams follow before long. Bruce Arena (AP Images)So what's the big deal? It boils down to a few key issues faced by all MLS teams. One of the bigger problems for MLS teams is finding playing time for their youngest players and players who still need developing. MLS has begun addressing this by establishing a relationship with USL Pro that has led to several MLS teams forming affiliate agreements that send such players to USL Pro on loan. The move to the lower division helps give those players game time they wouldn't normally receive if they had to stay with their parent clubs. At present, nine MLS teams have taken advantage of such relationships heading into the 2014 season, but even those arrangements aren't ideal. Teams are essentially giving up, in most cases, up to four players on loan to their USL Pro affiliates, and even if they have good relationships with their partner clubs, those MLS teams still aren't actually overseeing the handling of their players. What the Galaxy did is unprecedented. By starting a USL Pro team from scratch, the Galaxy can not only establish the soccer ideology of the new team to fit in with the MLS team's goals, it gives LA a missing piece to the player development puzzle, bringing the Galaxy closer in line with the majority of teams around the world. The Galaxy boast one of the best player academy set-ups in MLS, and by having a USL Pro team, they can now give more academy players a place to ply their trade even if they aren't ready to turn pro just yet. The new team will be coached by Galaxy assistant Curt Onalfo, who will not only be able to work closely with the Galaxy players who join the new team on loan, but also the academy players the Galaxy will fill the team with going forward. MLS will obviously have to do a good job of establishing guidelines to keep the Galaxy from using the USL Pro team to sign and stash players who aren't part of the club's academy system, but it seems unlikely that the Galaxy would be setting up this new team for that purpose. Given the amount of talent coming through the Galaxy academy system, there will be more than enough quality prospects with Galaxy ties to farm into the new team. So why hasn't this been done before? It wasn't a viable option until MLS established its relationship with USL Pro, and other teams aren't jumping in with the Galaxy because it isn't exactly a small investment to launch and operate a USL Pro team. That being said, you can rest assured that the league's other big-spending clubs like Seattle, Toronto FC and the New York Red Bulls will be watching very closely to see if it is indeed an investment worth making. The short answer is yes, it is something worth doing for every MLS team that is serious about player development and extending the pipeline from the academy system through to the MLS first team. If a large number of teams adopted this approach, it would be a serious step toward aiding in the development of players who for too long, have struggled for avenues to develop once they turned pro at a young age. For a league expanding as quickly as MLS is, filling that void in player development is key, and it is a safe bet we will see more MLS teams launching their own lower-division affiliates in the near future, especially if the Galaxy can make the most of being the first team to do so. it will take some time before we see the real impact of the Galaxy's trail-blazing move, but it stands a good chance of eventually being one of the most important things to happen to MLS in 2014. He's seen here at a campaign event last week. The candidate of the leftist FMLN came just one percent shy of an outright victory in Sunday’s presidential elections in El Salvador, a surprising showing for the former guerrilla movement. The candidate, former insurgency leader turned politician Salvador Sanchez Ceren, garnered 48.9 percent of the vote. He needed more than 50 percent to claim victory and avoid a March 9 runoff. That runoff, however, will take place. And it pits Sanchez Ceren against former San Salvador Mayor Norman Quijano of the center-right National Republic Alliance, or ARENA, which has long held sway in El Salvador. As much as a victory for the FMLN, Sunday’s vote was a rather stunning blow to ARENA. The FMLN won power in El Salvador in 2009 under Mauricio Funes, a television broadcaster who the Front put up as its candidate. El Salvador is a densely populated nation with a hard-working labor force, and strong ties to the United States. Indeed, more some 16 percent of the economy is based on the nearly $4 billion in remittances that Salvadorans send home to their families each year. Still, Funes’s government could only muster sluggish economic growth, among the lowest in Central America. What Funes did do was govern while two major street gangs agreed to a truce, a move that saw a reduction in levels of violence. For Quijano to beat Sanchez Ceren in the runoff, he’ll need virtually all the votes from the third place finisher, Tony Saca, a former president and ARENA stalwart who peeled away from the party and is widely reviled for corruption. Yet Quijano is unlikely to get all those votes. At his celebration, Sanchez Ceren, once known as Comandante Leonel during the 1979-1992 civil war, announced a tie-up with Saca to ensure the FMLN’s victory. For El Faro, a respected digital newspaper in San Salvador, the showing by Quijano was ARENA’s “worst defeat in its history. “Just five years after losing the presidency, the party has shown its inability to reform, to democratize, to offer a new way of doing things to a citizenry tired of its old ways. The most positive news out of the election was how smoothly it went, a sign that institutions like the Supreme Electoral Tribunal are functioning well, a fact noted by Mike Allison, a U.S. academic who focuses on Central America. “While no means perfect, the country's democratic institutions seem to be much stronger than those of its neighbors in Guatemala, Honduras, and Nicaragua. We like to lump the Northern Triangle together but it doesn't always make the best sense. At the end of 2013, the investm ent portfolio represented 11% of assets, compared to 13% it represented in 2012. During the year severa! events impacted the performance of these investm ents, in particular, the loss of value of securities in the second quarter of 2013 due to expectations of a reduction of monetary stimulus in the U.S. Bancolombia's strategy focused an reducing the volatility and duration of the portfolio to reduce its impact an the results, but also reduce the abrupt changes in them. 1.3. Headed by a 36 year-old house wife - Fiza Banoo, this fight is against the societal odds that have always kept women at a lower stratum, not allowing them to participate in the process of empowerment. Fiza, courageously chasing her dream to empower likeminded women around her, started a self help group six years ago with just hundred rupees in her hand and a handful of women by her side, concentrating on generating large scale employment in the backward regions of Kargil District. This was done essentially by promoting the usage of traditional garments. Fiza's sincere endeavours that started in 2007 with support from the womenfolk provided her a platform to register a non-governmental organization in just three years (2010). What Fiza could achieve in these three years working in one of the most isolated regions of the country is truly commendable. Kargil is located two hundred and four kilometers from the summer capital of the northernmost Indian state of Jammu and Kashmir. Inaccessible for most part of the year, this snowbound region has lived its share of miseries for being located near the border that India shares with Pakistan. The credit for recent familiarity about the place goes to the Kargil War in 1999. Sadly, their struggles - of men and women alike - are yet to be highlighted in the "Mainland". Fiza's struggle is an intelligent one. She decided to stay active when the rest of the Kargil is virtually dormant. During winters, when all other livelihood tasks are at a standstill due to extreme cold and erratic connectivity, this NGO provides a platform to house wives and young girls by training them and refining their skills at basking making from local grass; tailoring, knitting and carpet weaving by using the easily accessible local yarn called 'Bal'. The 'Bal' undergoes a process of decontamination. After shaving it off from the sheep's skin, it is buried under a special kind of sanitising soil called 'bal tsa' for about two days, so as to remove the sticky impurity called 'tsi'. It is then whisked with a stick called 'Drapp Shing' to smoothen the yarn lumps. A traditional tool called 'Bal Shatt' is used to comb the yarn which produces a much lustrous and ductile brand. And finally, threads are spun out of them with a local wooden spinner called 'Phang'. The work is distributed among 75 workers, in the age group of 24 to 50 years, such that the older women spin threads out of the 'Bal' and the younger ones knit and weave. "50kgs wool costs us 2000 rupees, from which about 42 sweaters are knitted. Each sweater is then sold for Rs 1200. A pair of carpets is sold for 4000 rupees," states Fiza, whose craft production relies on the orders received. Each trainee is sanctioned a stipend of 300 rupees to spin a kilogram of 'bal' and 250 rupees to knit the same quantity. All profits are shared among the team. Products like seat covers, gloves, mufflers and socks are also produced and with the left over wool, quilts and pillows are made. "Many workers come to me because of financial need, to either get their daughters married or for myriad compulsions of daily life", Fiza asserts with a tone of generosity in her voice. And since Pahari women folk are familiar with multitasking, they make time to indulge their artistic facets, spinning, knitting and weaving in their homes alongside their herculean household chores. Despite the autonomy and ease at the work place, a few women have been forced to quit work, pained by the criticism and callous allegations of 'wandering in the market unnecessarily' from petty-minded people. "Earning a livelihood can never be considered unnecessary, especially for a lady, when numerous 'unnecessary' impediments and censures crop up in her journey toward progress and self-reliance", Fiza avows. In her own struggles, she too has tasted disdain, her ideas shot down not only by her male peers but also by womenfolk, for flouting the conventional roles ascribed to a woman. Her only crime is her capability to broaden the horizons beyond her domestic confines. Travelling was thus declared a taboo for women those days. "My backbone is my family and my husband. It is with their support that I could travel till Jammu for the promotion of my NGO and organize awareness camps," she claims with a certain degree of pride and ecstasy. Recognizing Fiza's eternal attempts to bring the women folk together to not only work towards an independent life but to work as a team and develop a sense of sorority and mutual understanding, the Block Head supported her organization both morally and financially. She received a sum of 20,000rupees for putting up Awareness Camps on issues regarding hygiene, girl child education and anti-smoking in Suru, Akchamal and Poen, small villages nestled in the lap of nature in the outskirts of Kargil District. However, her biggest crisis at present is the lack of funding. Multiple appeals to the concerned authorities have not made the grade and thus she fails at saving the desired capital to run her unit efficiently. "A girl has a kingdom of desires and personal prerequisites. She cannot always ask her father to fulfill them. She believes in the notion of hard work. "Bekaar nahin bethna hai" (we must not sit idle), and encourages everyone she meets to work by every possible means, because work gives her enormous contentment and a sense of being alive. It is this aspiring aspect of her character that enables her today to run ten centers as the Block Chairman of the Self Help Groups in Kargil District. She even received suggestions about running for the position of a Panch in her village, which she declined owing to her reluctance in engaging with the murky politics expected and illegitimate accusations likely against a woman candidate. This fear factor seems to be yet another stumbling block to be tackled, one which still remains unsurmounted. Her dream wasn't painless to accomplish, but with her undying struggle to induce the ignorant villagers, either persuasively or by assuring them of certain amount of wealth, she managed to collect as many as 75 workers and a bank of machinery for the NGO. With no large scale trade unit of traditional garments in the district, her unit became the first of its kind and has boosted the economy of the poor rural artisans by providing them employment opportunities. The trade programme proved to be very relevant to the local topography, reviving the richness of traditional attire and customs. "People come, take pictures and do nothing", Fiza bemoans, referring to the visitors zipping past town who, fascinated by her work, make tall promises of help with funds and expertise, but fall short on keeping those promises. With some hope and buoyancy in her voice and a firm belief that her righteous step toward the emancipation of women shall not wither and waste away, her smiles confirms her resolve to continue working for the women of Kargil, frowning naysayers notwithstanding. Over the weekend, I saw some of this happening right in front of my eyes. I was a judge at the first collegiate wearable tech hackathon in the country. The event brought together students from varying disciplines across the U.S. to build prototypes that combine fashion and technology. They then pitched their concepts to business leaders convened by Kent State University’s Blackstone LaunchPad. The program is an example of how collaborations between philanthropy, universities and the business community can be engines for innovation. “As a university wide program working with all disciplines, the Blackstone LaunchPad has become the nexus of student innovation and entrepreneurship at Kent State,” says Executive Director Julie Messing. “We bring together students from the sciences, design, fashion and more to ideate and create. We also connect them to the wider network that will open additional opportunities. A similar event is the Clean Energy Challenge, a business plan competition for Midwestern students, entrepreneurs and researchers working on cutting-edge energy tech. Since 2010, Challenge competitors have been awarded over $750,000 in prize money, raised $40 million in follow-on funding and launched businesses with the help of a network of over 200 mentors and 160 industry partners. The key to educating the next great innovator is pairing coursework with these kinds of events that pull together students from different disciplines and connect them to successful innovators and entrepreneurs. And this doesn’t have to wait until college. We must get kids in high school excited about entrepreneurship and encourage them to stretch their imagination on what they can accomplish. That’s why NorTech has worked with the Ohio Board of Regents, the Ohio Academy of Science and Entrepreneurial Engagement Ohio to develop a $5-million, state-funded program that will create a youth entrepreneurial STEM ecosystem to support Ohio’s Innovation Economy. The program will include online courses on the Innovation Economy, a mentoring network connecting students and faculty to entrepreneurs, and a STEM commercialization and entrepreneurship competition handing out more than $1.6 million in awards and scholarships in the 2014-2015 school year. It’s clear education plays a critical role in America’s economic future. What’s sometimes overlooked, however, is the impact it has on innovation and entrepreneurship. For America to own the global economy tomorrow, we need to educate and support innovative student entrepreneurs today. The question is not whether entrepreneurship can be taught, but how. Entrepreneurship programs at universities across the country have more than quadrupled since 1975, as this report by the Kauffman Foundation points out, and economic development organizations, incubators and other non-profits provide training in entrepreneurship and innovation. “We can teach entrepreneurs countless skills and insights that will change how they approach their business, and we can do this in universities, accelerators and mentoring programs,” Wendy E.F. Torrance, a director of entrepreneurship at the Kauffman Foundation, writes for Inside Higher Ed. Young entrepreneur Rich Chamness, who took classes in Kent State’s entrepreneurship program between earning a bachelor’s in radiologic technology and pursuing his MBA, agrees. “I have lots of friends who want to run their own business, but they have no idea how,” he says. “They don’t know anything about finances, business plans or market research. But they can learn. Chamness his brother Shawn and fellow KSU alum Randi Labrier came up with the idea for a wireless headphone that wraps around your wrist like a slap band. Two months after they first pitched their idea in an entrepreneurship class at Kent State their startup, Go-Def, was born. Chamness and Labrier were two of the first students to take advantage of Kent State’s Blackstone LaunchPad. The national program has been praised by the Harvard Business Review and the White House for its work in helping students develop their business ideas and connecting them with experienced entrepreneurs, lawyers, accountants, venture capitalists and others. The program has been invaluable in taking Chamness and Labrier’s idea from concept to prototype. Among other things, Blackstone introduced the young entrepreneurs to Priceline.com Priceline.com founder and former CEO Jeff Hoffman, who mentors the team and connects it to potential customers and funders. “Blackstone Launchpad offers young entrepreneurs a support system to explore, develop and launch their ideas,” says Hoffman, who is currently a co-founder and partner at ColorJar. “It uses a team approach to mentoring that gives the entrepreneurs more perspectives from different angles. Starting at the Kilngreen car park, they crossed the Ewes Water, followed the path round by the ruins of Langholm Castle, crossed the first footbridge, and passed the new extension to Langholm Academy. The walkers continued along Eskdail Street, Wauchope Place, and over the Wauchope water into Buccleuch Park. Climbing the banking on Gaskells Way, it was westward on the track past Murtholm and the cemetery, near Skipper’s Brig. After lunch, there was a steep climb on open moorland all the way to the summit of Warb Law and the transmitter station, where fine views were admired. After a short rest, it was down the access track, back into Buuccleuch Park, across the Wauchope and back to the cars via Caroline Street, Elizabeth Street and Thomas Telford Bridge. A A MASSENA - The Massena Artists Association is pleased to announce that Ed LaVarnway and Karan Cross of Ogdensburg have been selected to serve as judges for MAA’s 29th annual Juried Art Exhibit. Ed LaVarnway is a Massena native and a graduate of MCHS. He earned a BA from Eisenhower College and an MBA from Syracuse University. After working in the Albany area for 24 years, he returned to the north country in 2005 when he was appointed executive director of the Frederic Remington Art Museum. At the Remington, he oversaw the exhibition and preservation of the world’s largest collection of the art and archival materials of America’s greatest artist of the Old West. As executive director, he managed numerous exhibits and juried shows featuring art created by local and regional artists. He also directed the restoration of the museum’s 200-year-old Parish Mansion during his tenure before retiring in the spring of 2013. He is an amateur musician and lives on the Oswegatchie River south of Ogdensburg with his wife, Karan Cross, and their 10 year old Spinone Italiano dog, Cara. North country native Karan Cross spent her formative years in gold rush country, California. Her professional career spans such diverse fields as crafting custom-design furniture, working with emotionally disabled youth, and telecommunications network design. A long time collector of fine jewelry, in 2002 Karan created The Wild Inside – an evolving diversity of personally handcrafted pieces in stone, pearl, and precious metals. Welcome to the site! Login or Signup below. Posted: Monday, February 3, 2014 1:45 pm The Chippewa Nature Center is a busy place now, but the land also had activity on it in the early 1800s. The Oxbow Archaeology Group works to excavate sites and understand the former human inhabitants of the area. In between an early Chippewa occupation in the 1820s and an 1840s Cater site, there was another site across the river called the Ponton site, named after Thomas Ponton. Dr. Scott Beld, a research specialist at the University of Michigan, who mentors the group, was at the center recently to review the findings from excavation in 2002-2004 and again in 2013. The small, but congenial, crowd included a number who had participated in the digs. The Ponton site is home to an 1830s settler cabin, Beld said. “They came here to set up a mill. We don’t know if it was a sawmill or a grist mill. Mill seats in the Oxbow area were observed and recorded in 1823 and 1831. This just indicates potential, though, Beld said. It later was determined there was not enough “drop” to support a mill. On Oct. 29, 1832, Ponton “located,” or made claim, on the cabin’s site at the Land Office of the United States, becoming Midland’s first known European occupant. On Sept. 10, 1834, Ponton, whose address was listed as New York, paid in full and a land patent was granted by President Andrew Jackson. Beld showed artifacts discovered in surface collection by Art Pomranky, who combed the site before the CNC acquired it. They included an ox shoe and a small punch for marking the initials “TP” into items, but what items those might have been is hard to say. “We’re sure he wasn’t making things there because there was nobody to sell stuff to,” he said. “The only thing we’re finding that they probably made on site were the bricks,” Beld said. “I don’t think they rafted all the bricks up from Saginaw in the 1830s. Some bricks found at the Cater site likely were scavenged from the Ponton site, he noted. It is believed that Ponton married in August 1833 in London, then sailed to New York. In June 1835, he and someone assumed to be his wife — the spelling of the woman’s name differs in the two records — sold the land for $525 to Edward LeRoy and Daniel Fitzhugh of Livingston, N.Y. Why abandon it? “In 1835, there was nobody living out here,” Beld explained. “The closest settler was like 12 miles away. That same year, the first steam mill was built on the Saginaw River and that also could have played a role, as the area population could only support so many mills. In 1838, the Michigan Legislature granted LeRoy and Fitzhugh permission to build a dam across the Pine River, although it could have been the Chippewa, as the names sometimes interchanged then. That never happened either, likely in part because of a considerable depression on the site, Beld said. “The distance you’d have to dam is probably close to a quarter mile. In January 1841, LeRoy sold his share to Fitzhugh, who held the land until October 1880, when he sold it to Helen Cochrane and George Mountain of Midland County. Beld showed many slides of artifacts found on the site, some of which offered evidence to support the dates found in records and also provided a glimpse into the Pontons’ lives. When surface collection began in the corn stubble and weeds, he said, a metal detector picked up lots of nails. As they began digging, they found a door lock and key, pieces of porcelain dishes and window glass. The porcelain helped pinpoint the time frame. Some of the single-color transfer prints date to 1828 and shortly after. Multiple colors later were possible, but in the 1860s the U.S. assessed higher tariffs for printed porcelain, so the focus turned to white porcelain with elaborate patterns. Clews of Staffordshire, England, is the imprint most commonly found at Ponton. “I almost wonder if the newlyweds had a pattern, just because we keep finding this one maker,” Beld said. Excavators have found 1830s porcelain handpainted with multicolor, floral designs. They also have found edgeware, pieces with green or blue edges, narrowing the period further. Green edgeware was imported into Ontario until 1836, he said, then simply disappeared, while blue edgeware continued through the 1870s. Redware, made in Ohio from a soft red paste, was found, as well as stoneware crocks and glass bottles using techniques that ended in the Civil War. While some gun parts found in the area have been traced to Native Americans passing through, the percussion caps discovered probably were Ponton’s because he was known to have been in London. “In the 1830s, this is a new technology that’s just coming in,” Beld said, adding that at the Battle of the Alamo in early 1836, only two percussion firearms were available. By the 1840s, though, people were converting their flintlocks to percussion. Faceted glass beads found on site also probably belonged to the Pontons, because those were less common among the Native Americans. Other artifacts include white clay pipe fragments and trade silver, including “trade beads” that usually were carried on a string, but might have gotten snagged and broken as the rough terrain was traveled. Pomranky also found an 1831 George IV English penny in addition to U.S. large coins, and a pressed porcelain button, invented in 1841. That’s not to say all of the site’s history is recent – some of it is prehistoric. So much surface collection has taken place over the years that most arrowheads and the like are long gone, but “pretty much every era” has been somehow represented by stone tools, Beld said. The oldest is a Paleoindian channel flake, from the manufacture of spear points and knives. Radiocarbon dating put it at 10,500 years old, but as that type of dating has been called into question and adjusted, the true age is more like 11,000 to 12,000 years, he said. “That’s the earliest thing we’ve found at Chippewa Nature Center, that little flake there. More recent finds have included everything from seed beads to a musket ball. The only indications of children ever being at the Ponton site were a lead toy canoe and a fragment of writing slate. A U.S. Artillery button, with an eagle marked with an “A” for artillery, might be from a Lt. Benjamin Poole, who had been detached from his unit for engineering, and was helping survey for a military road from Saginaw to the Mackinac Straits. He is believed to have been very ill while in the area, and could have spent time recovering in the cabin. “Maybe two or three families lived in the Oxbow area,” Beld said, but with Saginaw thriving in the 1830s and Trombley settling in what is now Bay City in the 1840s, the area was growing. “Midland’s going strong in the 1850s. Layers revealed as excavation deepens show that a regional practice also was employed at the site: chucking garbage into the basement. “There’d be layers of trash in there, and they’d throw lime down to keep the stench down. Beld showed two pieces of an olive glass bottle, the neck and base, and cheers went up from the group as they proclaimed it their most exciting find in years. They have even concocted a backstory, in which a man is drinking in a latrine to hide from his wife, but drops the bottle inside, smashing it.
