Over the weekend, I saw some of this happening right in front of my eyes. I was a judge at the first collegiate wearable tech hackathon in the country. The event brought together students from varying disciplines across the U.S. to build prototypes that combine fashion and technology. They then pitched their concepts to business leaders convened by Kent State University’s Blackstone LaunchPad. The program is an example of how collaborations between philanthropy, universities and the business community can be engines for innovation. “As a university wide program working with all disciplines, the Blackstone LaunchPad has become the nexus of student innovation and entrepreneurship at Kent State,” says Executive Director Julie Messing. “We bring together students from the sciences, design, fashion and more to ideate and create. We also connect them to the wider network that will open additional opportunities. A similar event is the Clean Energy Challenge, a business plan competition for Midwestern students, entrepreneurs and researchers working on cutting-edge energy tech. Since 2010, Challenge competitors have been awarded over $750,000 in prize money, raised $40 million in follow-on funding and launched businesses with the help of a network of over 200 mentors and 160 industry partners. The key to educating the next great innovator is pairing coursework with these kinds of events that pull together students from different disciplines and connect them to successful innovators and entrepreneurs. And this doesn’t have to wait until college. We must get kids in high school excited about entrepreneurship and encourage them to stretch their imagination on what they can accomplish. That’s why NorTech has worked with the Ohio Board of Regents, the Ohio Academy of Science and Entrepreneurial Engagement Ohio to develop a $5-million, state-funded program that will create a youth entrepreneurial STEM ecosystem to support Ohio’s Innovation Economy. The program will include online courses on the Innovation Economy, a mentoring network connecting students and faculty to entrepreneurs, and a STEM commercialization and entrepreneurship competition handing out more than $1.6 million in awards and scholarships in the 2014-2015 school year. It’s clear education plays a critical role in America’s economic future. What’s sometimes overlooked, however, is the impact it has on innovation and entrepreneurship. For America to own the global economy tomorrow, we need to educate and support innovative student entrepreneurs today. The question is not whether entrepreneurship can be taught, but how. Entrepreneurship programs at universities across the country have more than quadrupled since 1975, as this report by the Kauffman Foundation points out, and economic development organizations, incubators and other non-profits provide training in entrepreneurship and innovation. “We can teach entrepreneurs countless skills and insights that will change how they approach their business, and we can do this in universities, accelerators and mentoring programs,” Wendy E.F. Torrance, a director of entrepreneurship at the Kauffman Foundation, writes for Inside Higher Ed. Young entrepreneur Rich Chamness, who took classes in Kent State’s entrepreneurship program between earning a bachelor’s in radiologic technology and pursuing his MBA, agrees. “I have lots of friends who want to run their own business, but they have no idea how,” he says. “They don’t know anything about finances, business plans or market research. But they can learn. Chamness his brother Shawn and fellow KSU alum Randi Labrier came up with the idea for a wireless headphone that wraps around your wrist like a slap band. Two months after they first pitched their idea in an entrepreneurship class at Kent State their startup, Go-Def, was born. Chamness and Labrier were two of the first students to take advantage of Kent State’s Blackstone LaunchPad. The national program has been praised by the Harvard Business Review and the White House for its work in helping students develop their business ideas and connecting them with experienced entrepreneurs, lawyers, accountants, venture capitalists and others. The program has been invaluable in taking Chamness and Labrier’s idea from concept to prototype. Among other things, Blackstone introduced the young entrepreneurs to Priceline.com Priceline.com founder and former CEO Jeff Hoffman, who mentors the team and connects it to potential customers and funders. “Blackstone Launchpad offers young entrepreneurs a support system to explore, develop and launch their ideas,” says Hoffman, who is currently a co-founder and partner at ColorJar. “It uses a team approach to mentoring that gives the entrepreneurs more perspectives from different angles.
